    What does it mean in the Bible when God gives someone a new name?

    It means different things in different occasion.

    I recall two biblical name changes:
    1. God changed Abram name to Abraham. The additional "h" represents God. He also changed Sarai named to Sarah for the same reason.
    2. After wrestling with an angel for a blessing, Jacob's name was changed to Israel. "Jacob" is related to "follower" (the story of his birth), and "Israel" means “Perseverer with God"

    Names all meant something back then, so the name was to fit the person.

    When God changes the name of someone in the Bible, it means that the person will no longer be known by the previous name.  He/She will be known by the new name God has bestowed upon him/her.
