    Does lightning travel up from the ground or Down from the sky. ?

    Actually it travels in both directions, as well as from one cloud to another. 

    Always from cloud to ground.

    From the sky to the ground and then it can go anywhere.

    I'm wondering, if it came from the ground and went up (which it doesn't), wouldn't there be alot more wildfires?  Wouldn't there be alot of scorched eruption sites?

When one channel nears an object on the ground, a powerful surge of electricity from the ground moves upward to the cloud and produces the visible lightning strike!
