1 Determine what type of audio connection to use. Depending both on your television and on the surround sound system you purchased, RCA (red and white), optical audio, component (red, green, blue, red, and white) or HDMI may be among the connection types that are available to use with your surround sound system. Determine what types of connections your TV and your surround sound system have, and purchase the corresponding cable or cables if you do not already own them.

2 Connect the surround sound system to the TV. Whichever connection type you decided to use, connect one end of the cable or cables to the appropriate audio output connection on your TV and the other end to the equivalent audio input connection on your surround sound system's amplifier.

3 Configure the surround sound system to play your surround sound. Take note of how the audio connection input on your surround sound amplifier is labeled (HDMI 1, for instance) and tune the amplifier to that input. This is usually done by a button labeled "input," "source select" or the like. Once the surround sound amplifier is tuned to the correct input, you should hear your TV's audio outputting through the surround sound speakers.
