16 x 21 = 336 square feet

How do you know that each one of those feet is a square foot, or just a linear foot ?
The question said "feet". When one multiples length by width of anything, the resulting answer is square. Carpet comes in square feet, where I live, anyway.

Make your own diagram. Draw a vertical line 4 inches and mark each quarter inch to represent one foot. Draw a horizontal line 5-1/4 inches and mark every quarter inch. Draw two more lines the same to make a big square and them connect the quarter inch marks. You will have many small squares within the big square. You will have 336 squares, hence the designation"SQUARE" feet.
