Australia is an independent continent because it's surrounded by water and there is nothing connecting it to other continents like Asia or America. Although there are several continents that are connected to each other (Africa, Europe and Asia) they are considered to be continents because of their size. It's seemed easier to "separate" them into 3 continents. Australia However is far from all the other continents and is surrounded by the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. There are no specific rules to identified a piece of land as a continent, but the state of the current continents is agreed by all it doesn't seem to be changed any time soon.
