I am post shingles 4 and 1/2 years and have mild to sever pain along the affected nerve(s). on the left side of my face from my upper lip to right under the eye. I have tried averyhing from non narcotic medication to accupuncture to medicated pads. I currently take lyrica 200 mg morning and night and advil, asprin, or tylenol as needed. I have also taken some anti-depressents in the past, but could not tolerate them very well.Look forward to you response.

PHN stands for "post-herpetic neuralgia", which means "nerve pain after infection with a herpes virus". It's most often caused by the shingles, which occurs years after a person has had chicken pox. Please refer to the following website for information on research that's being done. At the beginning of your next attack, you might want to try one of the antiviral medications, rather than painkillers, because the antivirals will stop the problem at its source, rather than just treating the symptom (pain).http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/shingles/detail_shingles.htm
