Most roof shingles last about 20 years depending on the weather conditions where you live. I just moved to NC from NJ so I KNOW what its like up there during bad winters.
You might also check your roof tiles to see if the SANDY SUBSTANCE that makes up the surface of the tiles is breaking down or gone. A good way to find this out is to check your gutters. If they are loaded with the sandy stuff your due for a new roof. Can be expensive so I would shop around. Good luck.
