If you have an annual fee,pay the current account until it's paid in full. don't charge anymore. keep the account open till the end of year the account exists. If yu want a new card, get the new card first, don't over charge and pay each month. then you can close the account. but it will still affect your score. AND I KNOW SOMEONE WILL SAY I'M WRONG, BUT THIS IS ADVICE FROM CLARK HOWARD A MILLIONAIRE AND ON RADIO DAILY. A CONSUMER ADVOCATE.
