A judge ordered my brother in law to take out a new insurance policy on himself and name his ex-wife as beneficiary. Is this legal?

Can be, it is probably term insurance. Sometimes a judge will do that for coverage for the children if he is paying child support.
wow...never heard a judge do anything like that before. Perhaps he could do what the judge tells him for a month, then cancel the life insurance. That sounds crazy. Is the judge secretly dating his ex and planning for your brothers demise...lol
