I have a statesman tiller model 5650 24, THAT IS Backfiring and shooting fire in the muffler. Its a briggs and Stratton engine 5.5hp I have installed a new muffler which helps but still when running at half and full throttle is lighting up in the muffler. What should I do to repair this and does anyone have any diagrams that might be helpful.??? Doc

Backfiring in engines is a result of a lean or rich air-fuel mixture, coupled with engine timing problems, leading to incomplete combustion. My guess is that your engine is not getting enough air. Remove your air filter and see if that stops the backfiring. If it does, replace the air filter. It could also be the air intake valve (not enough air) or the fuel regulator (too much fuel). Solving backfiring issues should be left to professionals as diagnosis is not often all that simple.
