Would YOU like a warning about your computer?

I spilled a glass of water on my Mac laptop. My daughter did the very same thing. It cost both of us $800.00 to have them fixed.  We both lost EVERYTHING that was on our computers.- even the photographs! There's more: My grandaughter, age 18, spilled a liquid on her lap top. It wasn't a Mac and the people who repaired it did not charge her anything. However, she lost everything too.

You could try this: After the spill, open up your computer and cover it totally with rice. Do not do this unless you ask your repair people. I could be wrong. I would hate to make anyone's situation worse...Could it be worse? Well, I just don't know that answer.

I never have food or drinks anywhere near my computer. I rarely, if ever, spill anything but that would be the place that it would happen. Odd that three generations had the same accident.

Yes, we ARE odd Ducks. : )

The real answer to this problem is keep any kind of liquid away from your computer itsmee, I'm always careful in this respect.

wash zat? You schpilled some scotch on the c'puter?(Hic)
    itsmee

Oh ROMOS! Accidents can and do happen. My post was a warning but I do know better, of course. Puhleeeze.
Yup Tommy, I schpilled. Accidents can happen and they do. I believe Ducky has the right idea.

I have picked-up lots of electronic appliances that were filthy inside and out.(televisions, monitors, computers, hair dryers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, etc and laptop computers too. I open them to expose the wiring and circuit boards, remove any batteries and sealed components like hard drives and cd players. Then I clean it all up with hot soapy water and a brush to get sticky dust out. Everything gets hot soapy water inside and out including motors, relays, transformers et al. I even clean the feet of appliances and toasters too. Fresh water rinse from a garden hose with a fog nozzle until all soap is removed. Then I just let it dry on a shelf or in the sun. I usually takes a few days to get back to the clean-dry appliances and to reassemble and repair them if necessary. I test them electrically as I reassemble them and repair whatever may be defective. Toasters usually need blown warm air to dry the insulation panels where the heater wires are and anything with pooled water or damp parts are blown with a leaf blower or hair dryer to completely clean. Once tested and functional the vinyl polish and wax comes out to restore the shine and make it presentable for use or sale. As a result I have presentable clean appliances for my sales. Computers are demonstrated working  at my sales or they are not offered. 90% of all electronic appliances fail as a result of dust and dirt build-up inside the system. 10% fail as a result of physical abuse. All are repairable and all of the electronic parts are saleable....some folks use; used electronic parts to fabricate products, some of which turn up in the USA....I have several that were made of used parts, purchased by tourists and here they are...phones, computers, etc, etc. Considering the value of electronic parts in other countries ....no wonder our trash is wanted world wide and secretly sold in third world countries for fantastic profits. No wonder it is illegal to take anything from the dumps. I have to buy used and broken appliances from thrift shops and yard sales.

My desktop computer needs a good cleaning on the outside - I will do that tomorrow. I'm truly looking forward to it. Your post made me want to clean clean clean. Good information.

I enjoy cleaning som relick up and making it look like new. I got a 2 burner propane stove that was rusty and parts missing , cast iron from the 1930s. Took a couple of days to get the rust off. clean, replace parts and seals, reproduce missing parts, paint everything needing paint and polish up the brass parts....all to museum quality. Went with an old girlfriend to her cabin in the woods where I know it will be treasured. Made my day.

I leaned my old big Mac and thought of you. It's a work horse. It's not perfect but it's better than nothing. It's better than my lap top.

At one time you could get transparent keyboard covers which would prevent this problem. I am not sure if they would fit a laptop.

    itsmee

Mac wouldn't have them - not enough money in keyboard covers.
    nomdeplume

    Perhaps clingfilm?
    itsmee

Yep, I don't know cling film but I do know Saran Wrap. Thanks, nomdeplume.
    nomdeplume

Yes, it seems that Saran wrap (US) is the same as clingfilm (UK). 'Two countries divided by a common language'.

Mac keyboards, under the keys, are made as one sheet of formed synthetic rubber providing spring to the keys and electrical contacts for the printed circuit board to register keystrokes. Usually a little water will not interfere with its operation. But as a keyboard ages small cracks can appear in the rubber mechanism. Water is generally not a big deal on electronics....rainwater is practically non-conductive and tap water alone, with it's chlorination, floridation and deep well minerals and whatever toxic crap that seeped in can fowle things up badly.
    itsmee

I think our water must be badly fowled up. : /
    robertgrist

My water is full of mineral deposits. Spray it on a car and let it dry and the car is much whiter in spots that won't come off. I drink distilled water so my kidneys don't stone-up...it is that bad.
    itsmee

I'd throw up if I had a glass of tap water. It must have been 20 years since I had tap water -- only water from bottles.

OK so the computer is OK.How was the rice? Was it steamed jasmine rice or combination fried rice when you wre finished.

Sorry Itsmee but I can think of a hundred better ways to cook some rice.

Perhaps you can use pasta next time.Fettucini ala Hewlett Packard or something like that.

    lindilou

roflmao!!!!....you are bent my friend...gotta love it!!! LOL
    Tommyh

    Glad you enjoyed it Lindy.
    itsmee

lindi, he's bent our way, sweetie.
The computer is functional. I think I just don't know how to work it very well. I've never taken a lesson.
My 7-year-old grand daughter asked me to help her make a brochure - a brochure! I had to pass. He mom, my daughter went out and took a class in brochure making.
    I can't take computer classes ~ makes me n-n-nervous!
It's so late AGAIN. Time goes by so dam fast lately. Sheeeeooot.
    lindilou

itsmee! Maybe you and Tommyh could create a unique cookbook...of sorts...Roboticom Recipes of the Second Millenium!!! Just think....'O' magazine....Late Night...CNN....oh man...don't forget about us little guys............LOL
