What is Video Calling?
Video calling enables two (or more) people in
different locations to see and hear each other in
real time.
Both parties have a camera and a microphone to capture video and audio, and a screen and speakers to see and hear the remote party.
Video calling enables you to do things together with people who are far away. You can share a story, celebrate a birthday, play cards, learn a language, hold a meeting, work with colleagues – just about anything you need to do together every day.
To place a video call, both parties need the following:
Video calling software
There are several different software applications that support video calling including: Skype, oovoo, Logitech Vid, GoToMeeting, WebEx, and Google Chat. Facebook also has video calling application that uses Skype.
telyHD is pre-configured for Skype and does currently no support other video-calling solutions. Unless you have a telyHD, you’ll need to configure what ever software you choose to ensure that works correctly with both the camera and microphone discussed below.
A special type of video camera
Camera quality will have a major impact on the quality of the video you send to the remote party. There are a wide variety of cameras that will work, from inexpensive low-quality “web cams” to high- end models that capture video in HD.
Some laptops also have a built in camera. Most of these are designed to be used by one person sitting within a few feet of the camera.
A microphone
Many web cams and even some laptops come equipped with a microphone. These are optimized for use by someone sitting in front of the keyboard.
