When baby chicks reach the age where they can be sexed, do you know where the males go?

Commercial poultry hatcheries employ highly trained chick sexers to identify male and female chicks to determine where they will be sent, often within a day of their birth. Female chicks are shipped to egg production factories, while males, or roosters, are often sent to butchers. The sex organs of birds are located inside their bodies, making it more difficult to identify their gender. Further, there are 15 differently shaped sex organs to consider. Hobby farmers may wait until chicks are older to determine sex, as the cost to hire chick sexers is high. Chick sexing takes a great deal of practice.

I once read an article about how sexing chicks is one of the worse jobs available. What a job!
    ROMOS

I have a niece who does it for a living, she loves it, she also de-beaks the poor wee things.
    :-(
    jhharlan

De-beak? Never heard of it, sounds cruel. I doubt this would ever happen in the states but what do I know? So unworldly......
    ROMOS

It happens all over the world, they peck each other to death otherwise.
    jhharlan

I lived next to a guy who raised roosters for fighting, cock fights. Kind of illegal but, he was that kind of guy. Gave me the chills.....
    jhharlan

I just read up on it. You're right, all over the world. I'd say let them peck each other, may the best chick win......
    ROMOS

I think there might be a shortage of eggs then!
    LOL
    jhharlan

I use them only when baking. There are lots of bird's nest outside...
    FISH-O

Oh, I just can't take this.... calcified babies and beakless chickens.
    I am completely creepled out.
    jhharlan

In Texas we have poisonous snakes coming up out of the toilets, too......
    ROMOS

    Can't you "de-fang" them?
    LOL
    FISH-O

Coming up out of the toilets? They get past the traps?
    jhharlan

Never had the chance to ask one. A shotgun does as much damage to the toilet as to the snake. Hardly a hatband left.....

    FREE  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CHICKENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    jhharlan

I'd eat my dogs were they tasty enough. I'm never around pigs. There was a piano playing chicken at a park close to here......My housemate had a pet cow named "Moo" until the woman he was with had her butchered......
    FISH-O

@Julie.... I am far to sensative for these barbaric tales...
Next you will be telling me that your housemate dined on Moo for six to eight months post murder.
Oh... I need a vegetarian retreat in Peru... where they grow Maca lots and lots of Maca .
I can't take this any more!
Hail Hail the piano playing chicken!
    jhharlan

Me too Julie, they say pork is similar to human flesh, so no one would ever want to be stranded on an island with me!
    jhharlan

No kidding, I've heard that. Don't know who made the comparison but I buy it....

    FISH-O

Julie, National Torment the Vegetarian Day isn't for two more weeks!!! :D
    lambshank

Julie,I live in the country, and truly you haven't missed anything,I don't even eat chicken for awhile after I see them being transported either, so vegies perhaps for awhile at least
    FISH-O

Most of what is eaten in this house is locally raised and grown. My husband and son eat meat. We know where it was raised, how it was raised and the butchers who did the deed.
I can say that when I prepare certain dishes for guests they do ask about the meat (chicken and bacon specifically) and quite a few now shop at the butchers and farm market that we shop at.
Mass production of farm animals destined to become food can be a very ugly affair, transportation et al.
    jhharlan

Vegetarian is an old Indian word for "poor hunter".....posted on my FB....
    lambshank

I can't help but totally agree,I used to grow vegies, but after an atypical mycobacterial infection I'm not allowed to play in the dirt anymore
    FISH-O

I actually don't eat the flesh of animals for more than one reason. One being religious. Buddhist's don't typically pick up a gun and shoot an animal.
    lambshank

If I were to lay claim to any religion,it would probably be Buddhism, but I still need practice!lol
    FISH-O

That would be the up-side to Buddhism... there is no such thing as perfect, it is all about practice and the journey. Eyes wide open.
    jhharlan

I don't conform to anything other than plain old hunger....HA HA
    lambshank

me too Jules, but I'm thinking of omelet in view of recent discussion
    FISH-O

I cook like I am practicing for Master Chef. I made the most delicious Risotto last week and it only took me 4 hours to make!! Ha Ha!
I made everything from scratch including the chicken stock. My husband asked me to marry him again.

Male chickens (roosters) go to the bars and pubs where the chicks hang out.  Roosters were the first to coin the phrase "Lets go get drunk and pick up some chicks.."

    jhharlan

Don, you been around longer than even me, you should know the rules by now.....
    DonDowningJr

    Yeah Julie, 6 days longer!

Well, here there are a lot of hobby farmers, there is also a large roadside rest area outside one of the popular coastal towns, there are hundreds of roosters, and the number continues to grow, they are dumped there and the tourists are quite amused and feed them well, so I guess that works for everyone
