That is a fairly substantial span, of which there are several other factors to consider such as, whether or not it is within a main load bearing wall and how much weight it will support. You are always better off to make it stronger than it needs to be, than to have it sagging under a load after you have the job done. You also want to make sure you have a solid footing for anything supporting that header. Ask an engineer or an experienced contractor to take a look at it.
That header is apt to have some depth to it, so it should also be designed to resist rolling at the pockets where its ends will seat.
