    tense, in grammar, is the timing of when something happened....present tense is happening right now. So:  I am answering massoma's question.  Past tense already happened So I could write: I answered massoma's question.  It tells you what words to choose.  another example:  I am cooking dinner (present).  I cooked dinner (past).  I am doing...  I did....
