Nicotine constricts blood vessels, therefore there should not be nicotine in pregnant woman's blood, so that the fetus will receive the proper blood supply. If a woman stops smoking about a month before conceiving, there should not be nicotine left in her blood when she conceive.
Regarding alcoholism before conceiving, it was found that women who were moderate to heavy drinkers during 3 months before pregnancy, were 2.2 times more likely to have a fetuses who are small for gestational age, which means the fetuses' development is impaired. Therefore 3 months before pregnancy, it is advised to lower alcohols drinking to less then moderate.
