White blood cells are a part of the immune system and help the body fight infection.
One of the cells the body makes to help fight infections. There are several types of white blood cells (leukocytes). The two most common types are the lymphocytes and neutrophils (also called polymorphonuclear leukocytes, PMNs, or "polys").
The white blood cell count is done by counting the number of white blood cells in a sample of blood. A normal WBC is in the range of 4,000 to 11,000 cells per microliter. A low WBC is called leukopenia. A high WBC is termedleukocytosis.

When white blood cells are present in the urine, this could be a sign of infection (if there was also protein, leukocyte esterase, nitrites, and bacteria in the urine). But they could indicate kidney disease, It just depends on what your granddaughter's symptoms were. If she was having a fever and pain during urination, that's indicative of a urinary tract infection. Sometimes a vaginal infection will cotaminate urine with white blood cells.
