The original lanyard was a cord used to fire artillery pieces. the weapon was loaded then the crewbuggered off out of the way and one Gunner pulled the lanyard, fired the gun and they all raced back to reload.. In modern times the army of some countries still wear a lanyard around the very top of the arm then into the chest pocket and normaly a whistle can be in the pocket and attached to the lanyard. The colour of the lanyard denotes the corp the soldier belongs to in Australia.
Yellow is Armoured Corp (tanks and such) White is Artillery. Red is Infantry, blue Engineers and so it goes.
The lanyard is worn on the left shoulder except for the Artillery where it is worn on the right shoulder as a reward for saving some big wigs life a thousand years ago.
So tradition lives on.
