In the UK we have a sign both sides of the road when you enter a built up area, it is a round sign which has a red line around it that will have either a 30 or 40 depending on the limit. If it's a 30 you will get no more indication until you leave the area, if it's a 40 miles per hour limit, their will be a 40 followed by a small sign at about a half mile intervals to remind you. We don't have speed limits without signs to tell you what it is.

I thought in the UK, you use Kilometers on signs, rather than MPH.....like they do in Canada.
No mcm, we still use MPH on the roads, all our other weights and measures are metric ,but we have managed to keep our miles. Oh , and we are keeping out £ pound. They can stick their Euro where the sun doesn't shine.
I believe that in the UK a 30mph limit applies if there are street lamps, therefore a built-up area.
It does depend on where you are. The United States has almost as many speed limits as there are states. This website,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limits_in_the_United_States
has a table of speed limits which you should find helpful.
