I arrived at the carpet shop where I work part time last week, I noticed as usual that the doorway and pavement outside were covered in spit phlegm and chewing gum. I got a bucket of clean warm water, with some floor cleaner in, and continued to wash down the affected area. First of all someone walking by gave me abuse for leaving the pavement wet, then the occupants of the shop next door made a terrible fuss about the water, stating that one of them might slip, the floor in the doorway is made of a non-slip substance, so as I pointed out, you would have to be blind or stupid to not notice that the floor was wet, and because its a non-slip floor you would have difficulty falling over. I was just really annoyed by the fact that I was improving the environment by cleaning up after others , and they are saying the filth is not a problem to them. I thought that it was illegal to spit in a public place here in the UK, but apparently the law was changed in 1990 and it is no longer.
What do you think, is it illegal to carry out this filthy habit where you live, are you like me and find it a disgusting habit, or don't you mind.

It is not illegal as far as I know. It is, however, disgusting, unmannerly, and a self-centered act. No one needs to spit anywhere in public. If sinuses are a problem, the person is aware of that and should be intelligent and considerate enough to carry something in which to spit. It's not rocket science! Should people with a bladder problem or a bowel problem, just let it fly wherever? It makes me ill when I see someone (usually macho males) spitting where people have a right to walk.
Sadly, making it illegal would be just one more law that never gets enforced.

It should be illegal as should also dogs crapping on the pavement.

G'day Sunny,,first of all mate,you might have been in a bit of strife with health and safety if someone had accidently or on purpose slipped over,apart from that Sunny i also agree it is a dirty habit,but men rather than women seem to get a lot of Phlem from their sinuses,i know people who simply swallow it,i for one cannot do that,so should i have to spit,i will spit behind a tree or in the gutter,,i believe the bush hanky to be acceptable if away from the public,even in football they will spit or blow their nose on the same ground they will be tackled on..however in Singapore you can be fined or jailed for spitting on the sidewalk..might be interesting to see what others have to say Sunny..seeing as how we do have a cross section of people here,could be interesting..>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..

If a person has a lot of sinus drainage or whatever to spit out, he / she should go off to the side and do it or preferably carry a few tissues in his / her pocket and spit in there. So, there are alternatives to making a big display of spitting in public, especially in doorways.
