I drive an automatic at the moment, but I can dive either. Here you have to have past your test in a manual to drive either.  If you pass your test in an automatic, you can only drive an automatic.

We got the same laws here Dave,we musta copied from you guys..>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..

Years ago I preferred manual but automatics have improved so much that I now prefer them. In the states we can drive either if we are licensed.

we can drive either if we have a manual license,,if you only have a auto license, you can only drive auto..>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..

One license covers both here, and I can drive both. I love a standard but drive an automatic.

Duck, that means if you have a auto license you can jump into a manual and drive it in traffic, even though you have never driven a manual..????????

How could anyone do that if they've never driven a standard? They wouldn't get out of their driveway, let alone get down the street. Most people aren't that stupid. Even if I had a license for a backhoe, I wouldn't try to operate it without some training! Duh.

But Duck, they test you to drive a auto, then give you a license to drive an auto, and then they assume you will find out how to drive a manual with the auto license..???is that how it goes..???>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..

I am licenced to drive everything but "B" doubles.I don't mind driving manuals but it's nice to drive an auto & not worry about having to punch gears. Our current VW has both options.

Tom,i did not renew my gun license and i have one of the old boat licenses on my car license..i think i heard that the newer boat licenses had to be renewed..but i could be wrong..>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..

No Terry. They just transferred my old boat licence straight onto my new car/truck.M'cycle licence.

I can drive both but the older I get the more I like the autos. I taught Cathie thirty some years ago to drive a manual, I stopped on a hill and told her when she makes it over the top she'll know how to drive a stick shift. It worked and that's all she'll drive but the old truck did go through hell, thank God it had a tough old cast-iron transmission with a granny gear. Her latest is a 2014 VW Passat TDI with the 6 speed manual.

I have not been able to master the art of driving a stick shift so I prefer an automatic.

One license for autos/pickups, one for motorcycles, one for semis here.

My cars have had manual transmissions since 1986. Not everyone can drive them, making them less likelyto be stolen.

Good way to cut the odds! Too bad we are forced to think that way. :)

Years ago, my sons asked what I insisted on them, and that was all I could think.

I learned how to drive period with a manual. The first three cars I drove were manuals. My husband's father owned a used car lot, I drove all sorts of cars.....

Racers all usually want manuel transmissions because you can wind out the gears further and red-line the motor. The shift points, can be much higher and you can also down-shift more aggressively. But if a person owns an economy car an automatic transmission would be totally fine and probably more convenient too.

I remember those days Taj,i had a 1955 FJ Holden with a worked motor, you could wind her out much further than a auto, the cops even had problems catching me in their 1971 fancy Fords..>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..

Nice car! It would make a great Gasser too. Its smaller which would be even better, for racing.

They were built like a jelly bean Taj,so we put lowering blocks on her to get her close to the ground, and track rods for stability.best car i ever owned..>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..this photo is about the color of mine, but mine was better..LOL..
