    Here's an example.  You are the coach of a pro football team and you think the quarterback is not working out for your, so you trade him away.  


    Your team competes with the team to which the quarterback was traded, and he is flawless against you...completes 90% of A LOT of passes, throws for touchdowns, scores one himself, no interceptions....awesome.  


    The irony is:    someone YOU didn't think was good enough for your team has buried you.  

    Ironic - using words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning.
