    I would think you need an adequate light source which shines upon a surface (such as wall or floor), and an object which can pass in between the light source and the surface. The result on the surface the light source radiates upon where the object blocks the light source will produce the shadow.    So,  light source,  surface upon which the light reflects/shines,  object
